Following our promotion to Division 3 last season, we faced Broadbridge Heath 1st XI. The toss was won by Broadbridge Heath and they elected to field. It was tough going on what was a slow pitch and also some straight bowling from Broadbridge Heath. Richard James knuckled down and hit a fluent 42 and he was helped out by Ed Wyeth who hit a very good 62. Wickets were falling to easily around them and some poor running cost us 3 wickets. We got to 149 all out which was a fairly competitive score.
When we took the field, one of the our debutants Martin Swift opened the bowling and had an excellent first 6 over spell taking 1 for 13. He will be one to watch this season and he will certainly be taking a lot more wickets. Another debutant Joe Westlake also had a very impressive 6 over spell also taking 1 for 12. they both bowled extremely well and certainly fitted in very well. Unfortunately a couple of dropped catches cost us the chance to win the game, Alex Case from Broadbridge Heath who ended up 51 not out came in when they were 65 for 6 and he and N Charman steadied the ship with what was to be the winning partnership.
It was a pleasing game and great to see the youngsters who came into the team do very well.
