1st XI v Lindfield (Home):
Any remaining hopes of promotion disappeared with a loss to Lindfield at the MCG. Having won the toss returning skipper Luke Vinter opted to ask the visitors to bat first. Lindfield made 180 all out from 52 overs with Benn Challen maintaining his good form with the ball by claiming 4 for 59 and Nick Oxley 2 for 23.

Worthing's reply got off to a good start as Alex Harris and Matt Green put on 51 for the first wicket but as has been the case too often this season a collapse saw the score move to 56 for 3 very quickly. Nick Ballamy's well constructed 59 was in vain as the hosts were bundled out for 151 and a loss by 29 runs.

Scorecard

2nd XI v Haywards Heath (Away):
Tom Lund's side remain favourites to bag the second promotion spot as they beat rock-bottom Haywards Heath. Having been put in on a wet wicket they declared on 198 for 8 with Tim Dunn making 71, Brad Lewis 41 and Lund 35.

The Worthing attack made short work of the reply as the hosts succumbed for just 77 in 23.5 overs with Jamie Piper grabbing 3 or 12, Kevin Punter 3 for 34, Shane Felton 2 for 29 and Harry Dunn 2 for 5. Worthing are 5 points ahead of Middleton with one game remaining.

Scorecard

3rd XI v Brighton and Hove (Away):
A loss by 8 wickets to a powerful Brighton and Hove side. Having been stuck in Worthing were bundled out for just 114.

The reply lasted just 14 overs and saw only 2 wickets go down as overseas player Lachlan Stewart smashed 76 not out, in what must have been yet another proud moment for him and his family.

Worthing finish in the bottom two but who knows whether they'll be relegated?

Scorecard

4th XI v Horsham Trinity (Home):
Both these sides sealed promotion the previous week so there was nothing but pride to play for at the Manor. Trinity won the toss and elected to bat, recovering from 0 for 2 to make 113. Anthony Kane claimed 4 for 21, Glenn Harris 3 for 17 and Robson Piper 2 for 17.

The reply never got going and stuttered to just 61 all out with only Alex Anderson (10) and Kane (16) making double figures. Promotion achieved though!

A clean sweep for the Worthing elevens this week!

1st XI v St James (Away):
It was 4th v 3rd in the league with both sides having to win to maintain any vague hopes of promotion and it was Benn Challen's side that triumphed in a frankly bad tempered game. The hosts won the toss and chose to field first with Worthing making 159 all out, skipper Challen top-scoring with 55 on an "up-and-down" track. Nick Ballamy made 30 but Worthing lost their last 6 wickets for just 18 runs.

St James' reply started brilliantly as they were 80 for 1 with plenty of overs left in the bank but Corey Altis claimed 4 for for 25 and Challen 4 for 17 as the hosts collapsed to 144 all out. Worthing remain 3rd but are relying heavily on second-placed Billingshurst slipping up majorly in their final two games.

Scorecard

2nd XI v St James (Home):
Tom Lund's side climbed back into the promotion places with an easy win against St James at the MCG. The visitors made 210 all out from 51.2 overs as Kevin Punter rolled back the years to claim 4 for 47, Shane Felton 3 for 52 and Paul Westlake 2 for 38.

The target was chased in just 37 overs as Alex Harris made 62, Stuart Carter 57, Lund a quickfire 46 not out from 37 balls and Dave Leader 27 not out from 16 balls.

Scorecard

3rd XI v Southwick (Home):
A high scoring affair saw Tim Dunn's side chase 280 with a wicket to spare at the MCG. The visitors won the toss and elected to bat first making 280 for 3, with only Jack Westlake and Lloyd Osland taking wickets.

A tenth wicket partnership of 57 between Lloyd Osland (59 not out) and Jack Westlake (12 not out) saw Worthing over the line, the foundations having been laid by Tim Dunn (57) and Michael Hodnett (67).

Scorecard

4th XI v Arundel (Away):
A convincing win for Glenn Harris' men saw them clinch promotion at Arundel. The hosts elected to bat but made just 129 as Luke Winter claimed 4 for 31, Anthony Kane (in brand new club kit!) 3 for 12 and Glenn Harris 2 for 27.

Worthing reached their target for the loss of just 4 wickets. Alex Anderson made 40 and Kieran O'Brien 33 not out in a game where plenty of young Worthing player contributed significantly.

Well done to Glenn and his team on their promotion!

2nd XI T20 Final at The County Ground, Hove - 17.8.14

Tom Lund's men faced a good quality East Grinstead side in the final of the T20 Cup at Hove supported by a number of club members. Tom Lund won the toss and elected to bowl first but division one side amassed 198 for 4 from their 20 overs. Gareth Challen took 2 for 31 and a wicket each for Shane Felton and Martyn Swift.

The reply was always going to be a tough ask at 10 runs per over and so it proved as Worthing made just 160 for 4 with Man of the Match Alex Harris making 68, Challen 32 and Nick Ballamy 25 in the reply. A great effort but unfortunately in vain.

Senior Results 16.8.14

1st XI v Ifield (Home):
This should have been a comfortable win for Benn Challen's men, but a last wicket partnership of 58 along with the now mandatory Worthing batting collapse made this a nervy affair. Having won the toss and stuck Ifield in on a dry wicket Worthing had the visitors 58 for 9, but they managed to get to 116 with Corey Altis claiming 4 for 19, John Glover 2 for 20 and Will Fazakerley 2 for 12.

In reply it was Matt Green with a half century who made the main contribution until the 8th wicket partnership of Fazakerley (12 not out) and Gareth Challen (16 not out) saw Worthing over the line to give the hosts a win by 3 wickets.

Scorecard

Scorecard

3rd XI v Himani (Away):
Worthing travelled to the home of Himani, which is always a pleasure as the hosts' insistence regarding umpires for each innings makes for some interesting decisions. Having stuck the hosts in they amassed 229 for 9 with just one LBW right at the death of the innings. Joe Westlake claimed 5 for 31 and Dan Stuart 2 for 19.

The reply achieved 152 with plenty getting starts without going on to make a really significant contribution. Westlake starred with the bat too, making 31 not out. Skipper Tim Dunn scored 25, Stuart 23, Andy Culver 21 and Spinhar Shinwari 16 but they fell well short.

Not a great week for Worthing CC to be honest, as the best result was a draw!

1st XI v Chichester Priory (Home):
The visitors won the toss and elected to bat on a good looking surface. They opted to use all their 53 overs in amassing 260 for 9, scoring pretty slowly for the last 5 or so overs. The Worthing innings finished on 207 for 8 with a few threatening to win the game before stalling. Brad James scored 53 and Andy Reid 51, with 38 from the in-form Ian Gooding.

Scorecard

2nd XI v Chichester Priory (Away):

The visitors won the toss and opted to bat on a good looking pitch. They finished on 237 for 8 as Benn Challen claimed 3 for 44, Andy Lutwyche 3 for 45 and Corey Altis 2 for 37. This was regarded as being around par and very gettable with sensible batting.

The reply got off to a terrible start as the hosts slumped to 33 for 4 in the face of some lively opening bowling from Mali Richards, son of Viv. The ship was steadied by Challen (38) and the in-form Ian Gooding, who finished on 67 not out in Worthing 's total of 156 for 6.

1st XI v Findon (Away):
This will certainly go down in the annals of Worthing CC history as a classic victory snatched from the jaws of defeat; like the "Thriller In Manila" this could arguably be dubbed "The Ding-Dong in Findon", maybe.

Findon won the toss and elected to bat on a slow and stodgy wicket at Long Furlong. After a slow start for both sides Benn Challen came into the attack and finished with figures of 6 for 24, aided by Corey Altis' 2 for 42 and Luke Vinter's 1 for 16 as the hosts succumbed for 151 from 52 overs.

The reply didn't start well as Worthing slumped to 15 for 4, but a rebuilding job from Stuart Carter (16), Ian Gooding (33) and John Glover (56) got Worthing close with some excellent (mainly) running between the wickets and a little fortune as catches were dropped. Some lusty blows from Vinter (11) still left the final pair Jamie "the right-handed Lara" Piper and the injured Altis 16 more runs for the win. An enormous six over extra cover from Altis and a square drive from Piper led to a one wicket victory and 30 slightly jammy points for Vinter's men.

Scoreboard

2nd XI v Cuckfield (Home):
An easy win for Worthing against Cuckfield at the MCG by 97 runs. The visitors inserted Tom Lund's men who scored 180 for 9 with Lund scoring 54 and Brad Lewis 38 on another slow wicket due to the seemingly constant rain this season.

The Cuckfield reply never really got going as then were bundled out for 83 as Harry Dunn took 4 for 24, Martyn Swift claimed 3 for 9 after a Lazarus-like recovery from a life threatening injury whilst batting. There was a wicket each for Nick Ballamy, Shane Felton and Luke Barnes.

Scorecard

3rd XI v Eastergate (Away):
A loss against a first team is no disgrace for the Chairman's 3rd XI. Eastergate opted to bowl first upon winning the toss with Worthing finishing on 153 all out. Chairman Dunn scored 31, Kevin Punter 35, Michael Hodnett 19, Justin Nash 15 and Adam Bastable 12.

Heavy overnight rain put paid to all bar the 1st XI match on Saturday which only survived due to the deployment of the new covers.

1st XI v Crowhurst Park (reduced to a 20/20) - 24.5.14 (Home):
The visitors won the toss and elected to bat on a slow but good looking surface. A solid start before a mix-up between the batsmen led to a Stuart Carter/Andy Lutwyche induced run out. Lutwyche then took the key wicket of Kellen Powell via a steepling Benn Challen catch before Park were held to 111 for 6 from their 20 overs, Luke Vinter claiming 2 for 16 and Nick Oxley 1 for 17.

The reply was rarely in doubt as Matt Green made 60 not out, Andy Reid 18 and Benn Challen 11 as the hosts got over the line with 5 balls to spare and stay in mid-table in the league.

Scorecard

3rd XI v Clayton & Belgrave Adelaide (WSIL T20 Cup) - 25.5.14 (at Horsham CC):
A tight game at Horsham saw Tim Dunn's team go down by 5 wickets with just one ball to spare. Worthing were asked to bat first and made 110 all out in 18.2 overs with Josh Goldsmith top scoring scoring 27 not out, skipper Dunn 26, Glenn Harris 13 and Michael Hodnett 12.

A valiant effort with the ball made life difficult for Adelaide as Harry Dunn claimed 2 for 17, Jack Dunn 1 for 29 and Adam Squires 1 for 21, but some solid economical bowling from young bowlers Jack Westlake, Robson Piper and not-so-young bowler Kevin Punter whose 4 overs conceded just 6 runs.

1st XI v Goring (Home):
A comfortable win for Worthing in this local derby. The visitors won the toss and elected to bat on a pitch that looked good but lacked pace. Wickets were shared between the bowlers as captain Luke Vinter claimed 3 for 16, Benn Challen 3 for 7, Nick Oxley 2 for 36 and Andy Lutwyche 2 for 15 withe batsmen having two choices: block or slog, in their total of 101 in just under 33 overs.

The reply didn't start well as Andy Reid and Oxley went to the first two balls of the innings but Matt Green (57 not out) and Challen (29) steadied the ship, then Stuart Carter (13 not out) saw his side over the line and up to 4th in the league.

Scorecard

2nd XI v Goring (Away):
A frustrating game for the seconds as they played all the cricket only to be thwarted by stoic defense from Goring's number eleven. Having been asked to bat first Worthing amassed 248 for 3 with Brad James scoring a fine 103 not out, Gary Tester 85 and contributions from Martyn Swift (19) and Tom Lund (25).

Goring's reply never got going as wickets fell at regular intervals. Swift took 4 for 27, Shane Felton 3 for 35 and Tester 1 for 12, but the hosts held on for a draw and 1 point compared to Worthing's 14 points.

3rd XI v Aldwick (Away):
This trip to the seaside didn't go to plan for the Chairman's 3rd XI. Tim Dunn won the toss and opted to bowl as the hosts racked up 218 for 5 from 46 overs. Paul Westlake took 3 for 36 and there was a wicket each for Jack Dunn and Adam Squires.

The chase never looked like being successful with only Tim Dunn (19) and Kevin Punter (36) reaching double figures as the visitors succumbed for 69.in under 25 overs.

Match Reports - 10.5.14

To save me saying this in every report, it was blowing a gale!

1st XI v Middleton (Away):
Water had blown under the covers so a delayed start would mean a late finish on a very two-paced pitch. Luke Vinter lost the toss and the hosts gave Worthing first use of the bat. Sam Jones, opening in the absence of the injured Andy Reid, compiled a watchful but vital 55, with support from Ian Gooding (19), but the innings was given impetus by John Glover who smashed 57 at number 7 as Worthing made 176 for 9 from 53 overs.

The Middleton reply was entirely about Sean Heather, who made 100 in what is likely to become a blueprint for Middleton's season, as the hosts reached their target with 4 balls to spare of their allotted 44 overs after a short rain delay. The five wickets fell to Corey Altis (2 for 50), Luke Vinter, Nick Oxley and Benn Challen.

Scorecard

2nd XI v Middleton (Home):
The new covers at the Manor worked their magic although with a low scoring draw, perhaps it would have been better for both sides had they not. Tom Lund won the toss and inserted the opposition who amassed 167 for 8 with Martyn Swift claiming 3 for 43, Shane Felton 2 for 17 and Harry Dunn 2 for 40.

The response was led by Gareth Challen who made 50 and Alex Harris with 44 but finished on 152 for 7 and less points for each side than had the game been rained off.

Scorecard

3rd XI v Crawley Nayee (Home):
The visitors won the toss and elected to "bowl", with the 15 degree limit on elbow movement introduced by the ICC to allow Murali to bowl being pushed to the limit and beyond. Worthing were in big trouble at 72 for 6 before Marc Hinton smashed 73 and Justin Nash 44 not out which took Tim Dunn's men to 206 all out from 48.2 overs.

The visitors reached their target in just under 33 overs for the loss of four wickets as Jack Dunn took 2 for 30, Jack Westlake and Adam Squires claiming a victim each.

4th XI v West Chiltington and Thakeham:

A successful start to the 2014 season!

1st XI v Stirlands - T20 Cup (Home):
Having won the toss, new skipper Luke Vinter opted to bat against a generally inexperience Stirlands attack. Matt Green scored 54 in 47 balls and his partner Andy Reid scored 46 from 42 balls. With debutant Sam Jones making 18 in his first innings after his move from Portslade, Worthing set the visitors a competitive 137 to win.

In truth Stirlands never looked like getting close and finished on 60 for 9 with two wickets each for Aussie Corey Altis, Jamie Piper and Mason Crane, with Vinter and Nick Oxley claiming one each too. Progress made into round two, with opponents yet to be announced.

Scorecard

2nd XI v Stirlands - T20 2nd XI Cup (Home):
Unfortunately Stirlands were unable to raise a side and conceded the game.

Scorecard

3rd XI v Clayton & Belgrave Adelaide 1st XI (Away):
Having lost the toss Tim Dunn's men were offered first use of a slow pitch. Runs were shared around the batsmen: Dunn 48, Josh Wood 27, debutant Michael Hodnett 39, Josh Goldsmith 29 and Kevin Punter's 32 saw the side achieve an excellent 205 for 9 declared.

The hosts ended their chase on 169 for 7 with Justin Nash and Lloyd Osland claiming two wickets each, plus a wicket a-piece for Punter, Adam Squires and Jack Dunn in what ended up being a winning draw.

Scorecard

4th XI v Felbridge & Sunnyside 3rd XI (Home):
The visitors won the toss and elected to bat but were soon in trouble as the opening bowlers Robson Piper (3 for 23) and Greg Harris (3 for 13) ripped the heart out of a youthful batting line up. Sanjeev Kalra, Adam Bardouleau and Alex Andreson also claimed a victim each as Felbridge managed just 108 for 9 from their 40 overs.

The chase lasted just 22.4 overs with new captain Glenn Harris smashing 53 not out with support from his father Neil who made 22 not out, as Worthing reached their target 2 wickets down.
