Seniors - Star Wars Day Reports

First league games of the season and Worthing were hoping that the Force would be with them in their four games in the league.

1st XI v Preston Nomads (Away):
Once again the fixture conjured up a tricky start for Worthing at the reigning league champions, Preston Nomads. Darryl Rebbetts won the toss and elected to bowl for Nomads to rack up 238 for 9 from their 53 overs in a shortened game due to some lunch time rain In tghe wickets was Sussex batsman Matt Machan, making his league debut for the club, who took 3 for 45, John Glover took 2 for 45, with Benn Challen, Luke Vinter and overseas all-rounder Malcolm Lake all taking a wick a-piece.

Worthing were cruising in reply at 224 for 1 with Michael Gould (67), another debutant Matt Green (66) and Machan (84) inflicting the damage, but a collapse left Ian Gooding facing his first ball, which was the last ball of the game requiring 4 runs with every fielder on the boundary. The wicketkeeper somehow found a gap much to the delight of the team who stormed the pitch as Gooding aeroplaned around the outfield!

Historic win!

2nd XI v St James (Home):
St James couldn't raise a side and therefore conceded the game.

2nd XI Scorecard

3rd XI v Worthing Chippingdale (Away):
A new look 3rd XI under tactical genius and self-proclaimed "most successful captain in Worthing history" Tim Dunn started at local rivals Chips. Worthing were given first use of the wicket with the bat and started slowly, but Tom Lund (41), Nick Oxley (87 not out), Paul Westlake (yes you read that correctly - 19) and Jack Dunn (26 not out) rescued the innings and posted a total of 217 for 8.

Worthing got their hosts 9 wickets down but couldn't take the final wicket. Harry Dunn took 4 for 49 and Oxley 2 for 59, with a wicket each for Westlake and Jamie Piper.

3rd XI Scorecard

4th XI v Chichester Priory 4th XI (Home):
Skipper Adam Bastable stuck the visitors in having won the toss but a mixture of some sloppy fielding and powerful hitting saw Chichester pile up 230 all out from their 40 overs. Dan Stuart took 3 for 27 and James Belton 3 for 28 did most of the damage, with Greg Harris, Jack Westlake and Adam Squires all opening their wicket accounts for the season.

A great effort from Worthing to chase down the total saw them finish on 227 for 9 with Glenn Harris (73), Marc Hinton (58) and Neil Harris (23) the main contributors in what all agreed was a great game played in a good spirit.
